A genetic algorithm to solve the storage space allocation problem in a container terminal

چکیده
In this paper, an efficient genetic algorithm (GA) is presented to solve an extended storage space allocation problem (SSAP) in a container terminal. The SSAP is defined as the temporary allocation of the inbound/outbound containers to the storage blocks at each time period with aim of balancing the workload between blocks in order to minimize the storage/retrieval times of containers. An extended version of a SSAP proposed in the literature is considered in this paper in which the type of container affects on making the decision on the allocation of containers to the blocks. In real-world cases, there are different types (as well as different sizes) of containers consisting of several different goods such as regular, empty and refrigerated containers. The extended SSAP is solved by an efficient GA for real-sized instances. Because of existing the several equality constraints in the extended model, the implementation of the GA in order to quick and facilitate achieve to the feasible solutions is one of the outstanding advantages of this paper. The performance of the extended model and proposed GA is verified by a number of numerical examples. 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Yard crane scheduling in port container terminals using genetic algorithm
Yard crane is an important resource in container terminals. Efficient utilization of the yard crane significantly improves the productivity and the profitability of the container terminal. This paper presents a mixed integer programming model for the yard crane scheduling problem with non- interference constraint that is NPHARD in nature. In other words, one of the most important constraints in...
متن کاملA Genetic algorithm to solve the container storage space allocation problem
This paper presented a genetic algorithm (GA) to solve the container storage problem in the port. This problem is studied with different container types such as regular, open side, open top, tank, empty and refrigerated containers. The objective of this problem is to determine an optimal containers arrangement, which respects customers’ delivery deadlines, reduces the re-handle operations of co...

As more and more container terminals open up all over the world, competition for business is becoming very intense for container terminal operators. They are finding out that even to keep their existing Sea Line customers, they have to make them happy by offering higher quality service. The quality of service they can provide depends on their operating policies and the design of the terminal la...
متن کاملOptimal Allocation of Ships to Quay Length in Container Ports
Due to the continuously increasing container trade, many terminals are presently operating at or close to capacity. An efficient terminal is one that facilitates the quick transshipment of containers to and from ships. In this sake, this paper addresses the ship assignments problem at a maritime container terminal, where ships are normally assigned to specific quay cranes until the work is fini...

The Minimum Cost Flow (MCF) problem is a well-known problem in the area of network optimisation. To tackle this problem, Network Simplex Algorithm (NSA) is the fastest solution method. NSA has three extensions, namely Network Simplex plus Algorithm (NSA+), Dynamic Network Simplex Algorithm (DNSA) and Dynamic Network Simplex plus Algorithm (DNSA+). The objectives of the research reported in this...
